Chef:
The Chef is responsible for many aspects of kitchen operations including: maintaining food quality, food preparation, kitchen sanitation, weekly inventory, and kitchen organization. This position requires at least three years commercial kitchen experience. You will have help from the breakfast and prep cooks, baker and lodge staff. This position requires attention to detail, preparation and organizational skills as well as an ability to get along well with other kitchen staff. You will have the freedom to prepare daily dinner specials and occasional staff dinners. In our small, well-equipped kitchen, all workers must be flexible and willing to help where needed. The ability to lead and communicate well with others is a must. Our kitchen specializes in fresh Alaska seafood and the menu includes local favorites of salmon quesadillas and halibut tacos. From $1800/mo., depending on experience (DOE).
Breakfast Cook (1)
The breakfast cook position is for early risers. Preparing breakfast from our menu for lodge guests and roadside travelers will start the day. Preparation of food items, including homemade soups, will be the Breakfast cook’s primary responsibility. The Breakfast cook will also be responsible for: maintaining kitchen sanitation, tracking food inventories and working with our Chef and Prep Cook on food preparation schedules, and kitchen organization. Other responsibilities include: preparing for dinner specials, baking, kitchen cleaning and dishwashing. You must be able to work hard in a small kitchen while keeping level-headed during busy summer months. Some cooking experience is required for this position. From $7.5 - $9/hour DOE + tips.
Prep Cook (1)
This position has some of the same responsibilities as both the Breakfast Cook and the lodge Chef. Keeping the kitchen well-stocked and running smoothly will keep you busy each day. Making soups and helping the baker are daily responsibilities. Filling in for the Chef and for the Breakfast Cook on their days off will round out your week. You must be able to work hard in a small kitchen while keeping level-headed during busy summer months. Two years experience in a commercial kitchen setting required. From $9.00/hour + tips.
Home-style Baker (1)
Do you love to see people smile as they enjoy a fresh-baked good? Then this is the position for you. Duties include scratch baking of breads, pies, cinnamon rolls, cookies, cakes, scones and muffins. This person must be able to share kitchen with other employees, making the job that much more fun! Other duties include taking reservations, food preparation, serving, and light housekeeping. This position requires some baking experience. From $7.50- $9/hour + tips.
Lodge-staff (3)
Lodge staff responsibilities will include serving, cabin cleaning, dishwashing, food preparation, cooking and everything in between. No two days are the same! Two of the lodge staff positions have the primary responsibility of serving tables in the lodge (Evening Server, Morning Server). Our 7-table dining room and 6-table banquet room requires servers to greet and seat customers, take orders, clean and set up the tables, tend bar, cashier, clean, and check-in overnight guests. We serve family style meals for special events and small tour groups in the separate banquet room. The other two lodge staff positions help where needed including, serving tables, dishwashing and cleaning of our 11 guest cabins. All lodge staff will also be expected to help with cookie baking (a coveted responsibility), assist in kitchen cleaning, bus tables, wash dishes and do outside work including: lawn mowing, gardening, painting, window cleaning, snow removal and other assorted maintenance jobs, especially early and late in the summer season. Evening server and morning server applicants must have prior restaurant table service experience and be 21 years of age. From $7.25/hour + tips, evening salaried positions start at $1,500 per month. Lodgestaff will be required to obtain a TAM card for alcohol service in Alaska after a positon has been offered. This can be completed on-line with the assistance of the lodge-owner.
Nanny/Lodgestaff (1)
This position is for someone who loves kids and daily variety! This job splits time between lodge responsibilities (guest service, housekeeping and kitchen help) and helping care for the owner’s two pre-school aged children. Our remote location requires creative thinking for daily activities, including hiking, biking and outdoor games. Position opens as soon as May 1, 2008 (part-time until mid- May). From $7.25/hour + tips, DOE.
Dishwasher/Grounds keeper (1)
Our dishwashers do everything! Besides dishwashing, this person will be asked to assist with slicing and dicing of food items, cleaning the kitchen each night, bussing tables, customer service, and outside work including: lawn mowing, gardening, painting, window cleaning and other assorted maintenance jobs. Maintenance and/or grounds keeping experience preferred. $1,500 per month + tips.
Housekeeper (1)
We have eleven deluxe guest cabins, all with private bathrooms. Four of our cabins are brand new (fun to clean!) and have full kitchens. This position has the responsibility of cleaning cabins, washing and folding laundry, and cleaning other lodge facilities. Each day during the summer, the housekeeper is responsible for watering our fresh herbs and tomatoes in our greenhouse, and flower baskets around the grounds as needed. As time allows, other duties may include helping in the kitchen, dining room service, and additional care of our flower gardens. This position is physically demanding, requires daily attention to detail and an ability to work efficiently in an unsupervised environment. Garden Intern (New in 2008!)
The garden intern will be responsible for upkeep of the lodge gardens, flower beds, containers, greenhouse and grounds. We plant 4 – 50’ rows of primarily annual and vegetable plants each summer. Knowledge of cool climate vegetable crops and annual flowers important. The Sheep Mountain Lodge is located in a Zone 2/3 climate we grow only the most hardy perennials. Each summer we add additional perennial plants to our existing beds including our 100 square foot rock garden. Job responsibilities include: watering, transplanting, greenhouse plant watering and care, cleaning and bed planting.
Monthly salary: $750 including room and board. 30-40 hours per week, two days off per week. Position begins the first week of May 2008, ends August 14, 2008. Additional hours as a lodge employee possible and the work season can be extended until Sept 15 by working in the lodge. Eligible applicants will be studying an outdoor-related discipline at a college-level, will have work experience, be able to work independently, and have the ability to operate an all-terrain vehicle.
Winter positions: Lodgestaff position helps with care of our sled dogs (dog handler) and upkeep on the lodge facilities, trail grooming, hosting group meals, daily weather observations, and cleaning cabins. This job is perfect for a couple looking to make some money this winter while living in a remote setting. Salary starting at $800 per month.
