Hawk Watch Weekend

![]() Where: Birds migrating north soar through the area of milepost 119 on the Glenn Highway. On Saturday, April 17, Anchorage Audubon will host an informal hawk watch with experts on hand to help identify the birds. This period in April is peak migration for raptors, including red-tailed hawks (light and dark morph), Harlan’s hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, rough-legged hawks, and northern harriers. Look for lots of cars, scopes and binoculars on the right hand side highway pull-out near mile 119 of the Glenn Highway (past Sheep Mountain Lodge). On Sunday, April 18 the Mat-Su Birders will be on hand to continue the tally of this amazing migration of raptors. Who: For anyone with an interest in viewing spring bird migration, or just enjoying the spring sunshine and skiing. Time: While birds can be viewed during any day light hours, the best viewing (weather dependant) is in the early afternoons. Expert birders will be at the Mile 119 pull out from 11a – 3pm Saturday and Sunday. Lodging: Sheep Mountain Lodge will host the non-migrating birders. Cabins with private bath/shower and small kitchen available. Rates for the cabins are $99 - $149+tax, per night for two people. Dinner is served at Sheep Mountain Lodge: 6pm, April 17 – Mexican dinner, $20 per person including non-alcoholic drinks and dessert. A perfect way to end a day of bird watching, warm-up to a wood-stove fire and enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal while reviewing the day’s sightings. Please call the lodge to make a reservation.
Sunday, April 18, 2009 –Birder’s Coffee/Breakfast – 8a – 9:30a Breakfast includes coffee/oj, continental breakfast items, and the lodge’s specialty - sourdough pancakes. $9 per person. Sunday, April 18: 10a - late afternoon. Join the Mat-Su Birders for a tail-gate potluck at mile 119. Bring a dish to share with the group. This has brought out some grand champion recipes in the past, a bar-b-que will be set-up to cook on.
