In 2003, the Race Across America 4-man Team Alaska organized the Fireweed bicycle race across Alaska, to replace a race from Anchorage to Fairbanks. Race organizers wanted an Alaskan experience with mountains, wilderness, wild animals, glaciers, and roaring rivers. The Glenn and Richardson Highway’s offered a beautiful route to Valdez with wide shoulders and low traffic volume. The race attracted 124 racers the first year and has grown now to about 750 entrants. The Fireweed offers 50, 100, 200, and 400 mile events in Solo, Relay, and non-competitive Ride formats. Save the date: July 12, 2014! Lodge accommodations are full for 2014.
