Vehicle access to the Matanuska Glacier trailhead is found at milepost 102.  Note: there is a $20 per person fee charged by the private landowner for access.  We recommend MICA Guides and NOVA for guided glacier hiking or ice-climbing, no experience is necessary.

Self Guided Hiking Trails and Wild Berry Picking

Sheep Mountain TrailsThere are over 12 miles of trails near the Lodge perfect for exploring.  Birds and wildflowers abound. Maps are provided in each cabin for self-guided hiking.  In the fall (mid-August), wild berries such as blueberries, low bush cranberries, and crowberries can be found in great numbers within walking distance of the Lodge.  Fill a cup with fresh berries to have added to your pancakes in the Lodge restaurant or fill a bucket for jams and jellies to be made at home.

Guided hiking is available by reservation. Your guide will introduce you to the natural wonders of the Sheep Mountain area – including birds, geology and wildflowers.

Photography

Sheep Mountain is a shutterbug’s paradise with breath-taking views of Lion’s Head, the Matanuska River Valley and the lofty, rocky crags of the Talkeetna and Chugach Mountains.  Aurora photography (conditions permitting) is possible in the late fall after August 15.

Mountain Biking

Extensive local roads and trails provide a variety of options for mountain biking and hiking through scenic countryside around the lodge.  The Sheep Mountain Trail system behind the Lodge is great for beginners to advanced riders.

Wildlife Viewing

Sheep Mountain shelters a large population of Dall Sheep which are protected from hunting. In addition to Dall sheep, guests at Sheep Mountain Lodge can often view moose, fox, coyote, bear (rare), lynx and many members of the avian family including Wilson’s and Arctic warblers, Golden eagles, hawk owls and the ever-present Magpie.  Easily accessed walking trails behind the Lodge offer an excellent opportunity for viewing local wildlife.

Flightseeing

Sheep Mountain Lodge is fortunate to have 2 very experienced local bush pilots with air taxi and flightseeing operations nearby.  Meekins Air Service and Blue Ice Aviation both provide FAA part 135 certified air transportation for anything you can imagine.  Experienced bush pilots offer 30 minute to 2 hour flight seeing trips as well as drop off for hunting/hiking/skiing/etc.  Breathtaking views and possible wildlife sightings on every trip. These trips are highly recommended and can often be booked last minute at the Lodge depending on current wind/weather conditions.
